Gatto's Claims
I believe Gatto's claims are a bit harsh but also eye opening. He basically claims our education is similar to a cult and that almost everyone conforms to it because it is "The Norm" in our society. I can somewhat agree to many of his conclusions but only to a certain degree. Boredom definitely comes easy to people now in our technological, digital, handheld, instant gratification society. Everything is instant and people now feel as if they deserve to be entertained 24/7. The drive to entertain ourselves is greedy and needless for the most part. I don't think they necessarily teach that in school in my opinion. Schools and their teachings very tremendously but still in a restrictive area. I believe what schools should really teach is to be expressive and show individualism but also teach respect and discipline at the same time. I've heard that it is not the systems responsibility to teach kids those things and that is what parent should be doing. Yes I agree that is what parents "should" be doing, but sadly that is very rarely the case. In a sense I believe that Gatto was making that similar point in a round about way.
